Tea Story :

More than 450 years ago, when Portuguese sailors first caught sight of Taiwan, they were so captivated by its breathtaking beauty that they named it Formosa—"the Beautiful Island."

Nearly 300 years ago, although Han settlers had yet to fully reach the mountainous interior surrounding today's Sun Moon Lake, they discovered a land blessed with abundant waters, fertile grasslands, and an extraordinary alpine lake. Inspired by its remarkable scenery, they gave the region the poetic name Shuisalian (水沙連), a name that has since become deeply rooted in Taiwan's cultural heritage.

The name Shuisalian originated from the indigenous place names Tualihen or Soalian, once used to describe the mountainous lands east of the Changhua foothills. Over time, these names evolved into "Shalian." As the region is defined by the pristine waters of Sun Moon Lake, the character for "water" (水) was added, creating the name Shuisalian—a place where mountains and water exist in perfect harmony.

Sun Moon Lake is now celebrated as the birthplace of Taiwan's finest black tea. During the Japanese colonial era, tea researchers introduced Assam tea from India and continually refined its cultivation through selective breeding. These efforts transformed Yuchi Township in Nantou County into Taiwan's premier black tea-producing region.

Blessed with fertile, unpolluted soil, lush mid-altitude forests, a mild climate, and consistently balanced humidity, the Sun Moon Lake region provides the ideal terroir for cultivating exceptional Assam Black Tea. Renowned for its rich aroma, smooth body, and naturally sweet finish, Sun Moon Lake Assam soon became one of Taiwan's most important export teas. It was once presented as an imperial tribute to the Japanese Emperor and earned international recognition alongside the world's most celebrated black teas, including Ceylon and Darjeeling.

Today, Sun Moon Lake Black Tea continues to embody Taiwan's centuries-old tea craftsmanship, offering tea lovers around the world a taste of its remarkable heritage, refined elegance, and enduring excellence.
