Over 450 years ago, Portuguese sailors caught sight of Taiwan and exclaimed "Formosa"—the Beautiful Island. Three centuries ago, although early Han settlers had not yet ventured deep into the inner mountains of the region, they had already marvelled at its lush, fertile landscapes and magnificent alpine lake. Inspired by its pristine beauty, they bestowed upon the region the poetic name "Soalian".

The name "Soalian" originates from the term Tualihen or Soalian, used by indigenous populations near the western foothills to describe the inland mountain region. Phonetically transcribed as "Shalian," the prefix "Shui" (water) was later added to honor the radiant, crystal-clear waters of Sun Moon Lake.

While Ceylon Assam from India has long been celebrated as one of the world's finest black teas, Taiwan's Yuchi Township in Nantou County has cultivated its own distinct legacy. Beginning in the Japanese colonial era, continuous cultivar refinement by the Tea and Beverage Research Station elevated Yuchi Township into the premier heartland of Taiwanese black tea production.
